I absolutely love the brand Orchard Toys, the quality is amazing and so well thought out when it comes to children’s developments in game play.

From a learning perspective, the puzzle supports multiple early skills. Alongside motor development, it introduces shape recognition, animal names, and colour association. I used the puzzle as conversation starter with my 16 month old grandson by saying; “Where does the fox go?” and; “Can you find the green animal?” It is small questions like these that build vocabulary and encourage interaction during game play making it more fun and excitable.

The Woodland Chunky Wooden Puzzle is a charming and practical toy designed for little hands, and it delivers exactly what we often look for in a first puzzle; simplicity, sturdiness, and plenty of play value. Marketed for children aged 1 and above, it is both an engaging introduction to problem-solving and a delightful way to explore animals and nature.

The first thing you notice is its bright and friendly design. Each puzzle piece is shaped like a woodland creature; such as a fox, owl and rabbit. The are painted in cheerful, non-intimidating colours that instantly catch a child’s eye. The shapes are large and chunky, which makes them easy for toddlers to grasp without frustration. This thoughtful sizing means children can practice their fine motor skills with hand and eye coordination with confidence, even if it is their very first experience of putting pieces into slots.

Because the pieces stand upright, they can be used not only as puzzle components but also as little figures in imaginative play. Like my grandson, we made up a farm and interactively played by saying, ‘why does a cow say’ and ‘what does a frog say’. I also used them to make reference to colours. It is so easy to invent simple stories with your little one and keeps them amused for a long time. This dual purpose extends the life of the toy, as it is not restricted to just a puzzle.

The wooden build feels solid and dependable. Unlike flimsy cardboard puzzles that bend or fray, this one is made to withstand enthusiastic use and drops. You will appreciate that it does not splinter or show wear easily. It feels like a toy designed to be passed down once it is outgrown, which adds long-term value.

Safety is another reassuring factor. The edges are smooth and rounded, so there is no risk of sharp corners. The paint finish is durable, without any noticeable chipping, which helps you feel safe and comfortable about giving it to a young child.

Another strength of this puzzle is how well it balances challenge with achievability. For a 1 year old, simply placing pieces into the board is a meaningful accomplishment. As children grow, they may start to recognise which animal goes where, name them, or even practice colours. It grows with them in small and valuable ways.

If there is any limitation, it is simply that the puzzle is basic by design. With only 7 pieces, older toddlers may quickly master it. For the age group it is aimed at, that simplicity is a positive rather than a drawback, helping build confidence rather than overwhelming frustration.

Whether you want to purchase this just because or there is a birthday coming up, you will not be disappointed and to mention the C word, Christmas is only just around the corner and would make a great Christmas present.
