As huge fans of Dr Seuss in general and in particular, The Cat in the hat – this was a MUST on our list of shows to see.
The show starts with Sally and her brother starring gloomily out of the window on a rainy day completely bored. How were they going to fill the afternoon whilst their mother was at work?
A visit from a very familiar cat solves that problem – and just to add to the chaos that The Cat in the Hat brings, he also invites Thing 1 and Thing 2 whish really takes the bonkerness up to the next level!
The set design was in true Suess style with heavy black keylines and bring red, just as the costumes were too – LOVED all the black hatching on the Cats costume. The rhyming narrative was perfectly in line with Dr Suess’s work, and very cleverly written.
The show was zany and the actions and props more so! We had giant word card stating PLOP and BANG as well as some good old bottom shaking to make us all giggle! There were tricks galore and even bubbles and balloons in the auditorium.
When the craziness was just about to get totally out of control and the imminent arrival of mother coming home, fish manages to calm things down and the big clean up begins. Through fish uses the bowl prop throughout the show and we particularly loved the slow motion sections with flashing lights…
It was a fun and giggle filled 45 minutes of silliness, and we all need some of that in our lives sometimes – perfect for ages of around 4 upwards. It was lovely to see some of the little ones in the theatre dressed up as Cat – but if you don’t feel that brave, why not arrive in a Thing 1 or Thing 2 T-shirt – you will fit in perfectly!
