Hawkin’s Bazaar Zuru Robo Alive T-Rex Review

Reviewed by Deborah Banasko

Like most mum’s of 4-year-old boys I have more dinosaurs than I know what to do with; basic plastic figures, those which roar and random bullet shooting ones. This was our first robotic variety so you can imagine the excitement!

I’m always a little sceptical about toys that claim to move, especially at the price point of this dinosaur (RRP: £15).

Initial thoughts were that it certainly looked the part, with its realistic eyes and dramatic glow in the dark scar. I have to say that the glow in the dark feature of the scar isn’t something that I felt held much value as my kids generally don’t play in the dark. It still looked cool, though! And it is nicer than the usual blood and gore.

Once the batteries were in, I have to say I was impressed. The T-Rex walks and stomps, although it is a bit more of a shuffle and not the speediest of creatures! Obviously the smoother and flatter the surface, the better it performs, and it didn’t work too well on carpet as you expect with these things.

Were it priced higher then this would be an issue, but at £15 I was happy with the robotic aspect.

My 7-year-old daughter loved it as it became incorporated into her Barbies being attacked by a giant dinosaur and “running for their lives”. The roaring sound is pretty realistic too.

It also chomps; cue kids fighting over who gets to have their finger bitten by the dinosaur, and it’s great at eating Barbies’ legs incidentally (no damaged caused may I add).

There are little wheels underneath T-Rex so you can actually just wheel him around yourself which is nice. My kids captured him with a ribbon and pulled him along to jail, so it just adds to the imaginative play.

If I consider how much I have spent on basic plastic dinosaurs, there is a lot more play time from something like this and it really is a good price. Perfect for any dinosaur loving child at Christmas.

I noticed that Hawkin’s Bazaar also supply a snake version, so I am toying with idea of buying this for Christmas so that both children have something to attack poor Barbie with.

I would give this toy 5 out of 5 stars, taking into account the fantastic price, quality of the product and what you actually get for your money in terms of features.
