As an avid lover of all books, I was privileged to get the opportunity to review the sound book ‘Sing With Mizzie – Nursery Rhymes’ by Mizzie Kangaroo Productions.
We all know the many benefits of reading books with babies and young children including the exposure to a wealth of vocabulary, fostering creativity and creating times of engagement and special bonding moments between the adult and child – I personally speak from an educator’s point of view on the importance of nurturing a love of books from a young age. I love the fact that if a child is read a different book every night from birth to their first birthday, they will have read 365 books and ‘Sing With Mizzie – Nursery Rhymes’ is an ideal book to include in a young child’s library and can be read to children from birth onwards.
The book features a cute, friendly, golden kangaroo called Mizzie who travels through the outback of Australia with a young girl and boy. Each glossy double page spread of the book features an Australian scene along with one textured button which, when touched, plays a traditional nursery rhyme. My favourite nursery rhyme included in the book was ‘Row, Row, Row the Boat’ – every child loves the ‘scream’ bit at the end! The really unique thing about the ‘Sing With Mizzie – Nursery Rhymes’ is that each nursery rhyme is actually sung by a Queensland children’s choir and features the children singing the rhyme to backing music – many sound books just contain backing tracks. I really liked the added touch of the children singing as it enables young children to listen to the words and then join in as they gain confidence. It also means that the adult who is sharing the book with the child does not necessarily need to sing each rhyme if they have had a particularly tiring day! The added bonus with this book is that you can also switch off the sound using a switch on the back cover so you can save the batteries or read the book without the sound and add your own sound effects!
‘Sing With Mizzie – Nursery Rhymes’ is the perfect sized book for young children with the measurements of 16.7cm x 16.7cm x 2cm. The board book is sturdy enough to be gripped by little hands and the fact that it is a hard back book with hard pages means that this book will last throughout the child’s early years and could then even be passed through the family.
Every child should have a traditional nursery rhyme book in their collection of books and ‘Sing With Mizzie – Nursery Rhymes’ is the perfect example of this book. I would recommend that this book could be the ideal gift for new babies, a first birthday or a stocking present. The Mizzie the Kangaroo website (https://mizziethekangaroo.co.uk/) shows that there is a whole collection of Mizzie the Kangaroo products (other books and teething toys etc.) so if the young people in your life enjoy ‘Sing With Mizzie – Nursery Rhymes’, it is reassuring to know that you can continue to advance their love of Mizzie and reading with other products in the range.
