Jack Taylor is back for a second collection of stories based on the novels by Ken Bruen. This 2 disc set features 3 feature length 90 minute stories – The Dramatist, Priest and Shot Down. The more I watch of Jack Taylor the more enjoyable and addictive it is.
Jack Taylor (Iain Glen) is a hard drinking, old-school ex-cop (Garda Síochána) from Galway in Ireland. Since being kicked out of the Garda he has been become a private investigator, a finder. He takes on cases the Guards refuse to investigate, no matter how difficult or hopeless. But with his sharp tongue, wit and soft heart he makes as many enemies as friends but gets the job done with the help of his sidekick Cody (Killian Scott) and Garda Kate Noonan (Nora-Jane Noone).
The Dramatist – Seven months after his mother’s stroke Jack is still sober and staying off the drink. When a young university student falls from a roof dressed in costume the police rule it as a suicide as there is a note wrapped around her ring finger and she has overdosed on heroin. Jack is hired by a university professor to look into her death, but all is not as it seems and could see Jack get into a lot of trouble.
Priest – When a priest is beheaded in church Jack is asked to investigate as it may involve a cover up by the church of the abuse of altar boys. Jack has to uncover a lot of secrets to get to the truth. Someone is out for revenge.
Shot Down – Jack is not coping very well after a personal tragedy and is travelling around Ireland taking on any case no matter how mundane until he finds a young girl running through the woods in Dublin after witnessing her mother’s murder. Rosie has suppressed her memory and Jack gets involved with the travelling community and takes on the dangerous case of finding the killer, while dealing with 2 feuding traveller families.
Overall I am loving the Jack Taylor stories. Iain Glen as the stubborn private investigator that will do anything it takes to solve his cases is excellent. The stories are well portrayed and are addictive viewing. I enjoyed the first season but this second collection is far superior.
An excellent crime drama.
