When I saw Leapfrog had a Magic Adventures Telescope, I was excited to try it with my 8 year old son, as he loves to ask questions about space that I don’t know the answers to! He has also really enjoyed other Leapfrog toys and owns the interactive globe and camera, so when I saw this telescope was by a trusted company that combines fun and learning for anyone interested in astronomy, it was a must try!
The telescope arrived in a box that made the contents look very exciting! Upon opening it was well packaged, and included a set up guide and even some batteries to get you started! It was fairly easy to assemble – although the pictures in the instruction manual weren’t the clearest and the manual as a whole was not very well laid out – but it didn’t take long so we got to start looking at the stars quickly! The telescope was easy to use and adjust so my son could operate it without us needing to help. It is also fairly light and seems durable, making it easy to carry around and hopefully last a long time!
The telescope doesn’t have a viewing lens you put your eye up to, but with this one it is all seen on the small screen. This was a little disappointing, but it did make it easy for our 4 year old to use as well. There is a dial on the side of it you can use to focus the images, which worked well as they became sharp and clear, with the zoom going up to 110x. Once you have found what you want to see, you can even take pictures at what you’re looking at! This was a great feature as it meant my son could show my husband everything he had seen. It has some useful voice prompts as well telling you when you can’t move the telescope further in one direction. There are also over 100 videos and images provided so you can learn more about space, and over 650 facts about the solar system, the moon, star life cycles, and constellations – which made it very educational as well as fun! That combined with games and quizzes means hours of entertainment for the whole family, although the music behind the facts becomes a little annoying.
Overall, the Leapfrog Magic Adventures Telescope was a great gift for my son, and I think it would be a great investment for any child interested in space as it makes it fun. It is currently set up in my son’s bedroom so bedtimes could become more interesting! It is a little on the pricier side, but for everything included you can understand why. If you want a more traditional telescope though this isn’t it. The only reason I have given it a rating of 4 out of 5 instead of 5 is the fact you can’t look through it like a normal telescope and the screen could do with being a little bigger. I would definitely recommend it though, along with Leapfrog as a company as they always seem to make good quality, educational toys.
