As a bit of a gin connoisseur – ok, ok, someone who loves to drink the good juniper spirited stuff – I jumped at the chance to review Kopparberg’s new offering.
The crafty team at Kopparberg developed the new premium Kopparberg Passionfruit & Orange Gin and launched it in March 2020. While Kopparberg are best known for their variety of fruit ciders, they also produce flavoured gins, including Strawberry & Lime and Mixed Fruit. The idea for this particular gin was developed off the back of the popularity of their passionfruit cider, and an apparent increase in demand for orange flavoured alcoholic beverages.
The bottle itself is quite attractive while reminiscent of other gin brands, and is completed with the trusted trademark black and gold Kopparberg label. Filled with a glorious amber liquid, this will definitely stand out on any supermarket shelf.
Intrigued by its contents, as advised, I duly measured out the brightly coloured spirit, and served it over plenty of ice, with a splash of tonic water, and a slice of orange. A combo I’d highly recommend. Or if you have something of a sweet tooth, the bottle (and the Kopparberg website) advise you can always opt for lemonade – or if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, bitter lemon, or a premium flavoured tonic. Yum!
The orange and passionfruit flavours were quite apparent when opening the bottle and while pouring out my first measure, as the strong but pleasant citrus aroma is incredibly present, without being overpowering. Described as “a bold and exotic taste”, I had high hopes, and I wasn’t disappointed.
The orange nor passionfruit were overwhelming. They seem to be perfectly balanced, with neither taking centre stage to the detriment of the other. Teetering on the edge of sweetness, I was pleasantly surprised to find that mixed with the tonic water, the drink was delightfully refreshing.
It should be noted that I normally opt for a gin of the non-flavoured variety as I often find flavoured gins too sweet, or in-your-face-fruity. They’re also more likely to be liqueur strength (around 20% ABV), so I find they don’t really pack that delicious alcoholic punch you most likely expect from a gin spirit. But at full strength, 37.5% ABV, Kopparberg Passionfruit & Orange gin isn’t lacking in that alcohol hit, or taste. So, maybe if berry-flavoured pink gin isn’t your thing, this new citrus offering might just hit the spot. And, as it’s widely available at a number of major retailers including Tesco, and online at Amazon, you’ll be able to get your hands on it quite easily.
Honestly? I might even be inclined to pick up a bottle of their Strawberry and Lime gin, or Mixed Fruit gin, next time I’m in the supermarket, just to test them out (solely for research purposes only, of course!).
So, to sum up, the enjoyable Kopparberg Passionfruit & Orange gin would be ideal for sipping as you enjoy the last of Summer weather, as a celebratory tipple or as a cheeky evening dram.
