I quickly learnt as a parent that babies and children all love bubbles and to be honest so do many parents! At first just watching them can provide much entertainment and then soon the fun begins attempting to pop them! Watching and popping bubbles are activities that are recommended from early on to do with your baby to help improve eye tracking and visual and cognitive development, and then motor development and co ordination. Repetitively blowing bubbles can however be slightly less entertaining for a parent and so bubble machines certainly have a place. I had actually been on the hunt for the perfect one when I was offered this review and therefore was keen to try it.
The parcel arrived in a bit of a battered state, with the item wrapped haphazardly in bubble wrap inside. The item box was also damaged in the corner, not something that really matters once open, as the product itself wasn’t damaged, but I would be unsure about buying and sending this directly as a gift if it arrived in this poor state. The item box is brightly coloured and indeed eye catching with an open space clearly showing off the product. I liked that this was just an opening in the box rather than having a plastic ‘viewing area’. Like many children’s toys a little patience is required in order to access the item, with plastic latches securing the item at the base. Once inside 4 AA batteries are needed. Luckily we had batteries in so no delays were had as these are not supplied. The bright colours continue, as the item is a nice combination of yellow, green and purple. I personally liked the gender neutrality of this. The bubble maker is made entirely of plastic, so whilst not one for the eco warriors, hopefully it is at least long lasting and easy to wipe down. An instruction leaflet is included (as well as a 3 step imagine sequence on the box) but to be honest once the batteries are inserted (a mini screwdriver is required to do this), all you need to do is pour the bubble mixture into the base of the machine and press the button. A 4oz (118ml) bottle of bubble mixture is provided and any remaining mixture can be poured back in to be re used at a later date. I did find this process a little messy as the mixture is easily spilt. Definitely a task for the adults! The mixture provided also doesn’t last long at all so a large bottle is worth purchasing alongside it.
Once on, as advertised, the machine does indeed produce what appears as an endless ‘wave’ of ‘gazillions’ of large bubbles. The product is advertised as for indoor and outdoor use. Whilst this maybe true for large hall spaces, I will certainly not be using inside my home to avoid the sticky bubble reside from appearing all over my walls and floors. For me the other downside was that the bubble mixture literally sits in the open base of the machine. It really therefore can only be handled by the adults to avoid spillages. For me therefore this is more than just to be used under supervision but the item itself not really for the child to touch.
This bubble machine appears to sit mid range in the market given its price and personally I wouldn’t be looking to spend much more than £10 on this sort of item. I have yet to try cheaper options so unable to compare directly. However if this lasts then I would say it was worth the price given its larger size and much larger bubbles! I can certainly see this providing much outdoor entertainment in the sunshine.
