I saw this show at the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford on their opening night. The Alhambra is a beautiful building but currently caught in the middle of major roadworks all around the theatre so please keep this in mind and allow plenty of time to get to there!
The backdrop was initially a basic but very sparkly black tinsel curtain. But the stage gets more exciting as the show goes on!
Straight from the first scene, this production was bursting with upbeat, catchy tunes which would stick in your head and make you wish you knew the words as it gave me such an urge to singalong! Most scenes were brought to life with that Bollywood dancing we know and love. It was everything you expected it to be but with so much more storyline and meaning to it. The musical features a very likeable cast with some excellent characters. Some of my favourites were Shona (played by Gigi Zahir) and Frankie’s friend, Goldy (played by the bubbly Katie Sasi). Frankie was outstanding and made the audience fall in love with her instantly.
A show about chasing your dreams and not forgetting a string of amusing cliches as follow Frankie through her story. All of the actors played their parts well and I warmed to them very quickly.
A theme in the story is super relevant to this day; highlighting the patriarchy, gender inequality, and that we need to empower one another.
However, this is such a positive and uplifting musical which would happily see again. There are some very realistic themes throughout, but rest assured, you will leave with a big smile on your face whilst wishing you could turn every conversation or argument into a full musical number! The singing was superb. Such strong and beautiful voices by all and they sang with meaning which added some emotion.
The lead actor, ‘Frankie’ who is played by the breath taking Leila Zaidi, has an exceptional voice and is absolutely stunning. The costumes were so dazzling, beautiful colours and looked gorgeous on the cast. It would have been nice to have seen ‘Goldy’ (Katie Sasi) in a few more glamorous outfits. She is such a loveable character who demonstrates true friendship, support, and how important the “Brown Sugar Sisterhood” is. No matter who you are, you will always need a friend. They showed that friendships prevail!
Women are indeed warriors. This spectacular show will leave you feeling uplifted and ready to face the world feeling fierce!
There’s a little bit of swearing here and there but nothing I found offensive.
The theatre filled with applause and laughter in all the right places.
Yes, this a Bollywood style musical but is relatable to people of all cultures and backgrounds, and all genders. It is a great show to watch with friends or family. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
