Big Game Hunters Standard Garden Chess Set Review

Reviewed by Debbie Talbot

My niece loves playing chess and my daughter wanted to learn. I therefore jumped at the opportunity of reviewing this garden chess game from Big Game Hunters – experts in outdoor games and play equipment.

When the game arrived in a fairly large package (L71.5cm x 22cm x 47.5cm), both girls could not open the box and get started quick enough. The box contained 32 blow moulded chess pieces, a PVC chess mat and instructions. The smallest piece, the pawn, stands at 20cm (8”) with the largest piece, the King, stands at 32cm (12.5”) all with a base diameter of 9.5cm. The easy to fold and easy to clean PVC chess mat measures 1.2 metres.

After a quick read of the well laid out instructions they were ready to go and rushed off into the garden to set up (just as well it was a nice, sunny day). What I like best about the instructions is that they are suitable for any level of chess player, from novice like myself to expert. They clearly tell you which moves each piece on the chess board may make.

So once in the garden they removed the plastic mat from the box and laid it out on the patio. They then carefully removed all of the chess pieces and placed them in their correct positions on the chess board. The pieces are all very sturdy. The girls then took turns to play. My niece loved teaching the various members of our family how to play chess and on such a large scale!

Both girls loved playing chess outside in the garden. The game is for 2 players, age 6 and up. My niece is 13 and my daughter is 10. It was so much fun to watch them play. It got very competitive, each move so clearly thought out by them both. Their first game ended as a draw when both girls agreed to end the game. They have played many more games since. What’s so handy about the game is that the mat folds up to easily fit back into the box it came in. The pieces can be tidied away into the box too.

This is such a fun game for the whole family. Not only does it get everybody out in the fresh air (and away from electronic gadgets!), it also gets your brain working with having to work out your next moves. It is a very durable set and easy to keep clean. It is great for Summer fun in the garden and especially for parties, BBQ’s or any other outdoor event.

I would recommend this game and Big Game Hunters as a whole for lots of family fun and can keep you entertained for hours at a time (depending on your chess skills of course!).
