I have been given the opportunity to review a children’s board game called Buzz Words by Orchard toys. The outer packaging is lovely, it’s colourful, explains in pictures as well as wording what the game is all about. It shows that it is designed to promote language and literacy skills, as well as developing observational and word building skills. The back of the box explains the four games you can play with Buzz Words in full colour making it easy for children and parents alike to follow.
On opening the box I found 4 double sided game cards, 16 words and corresponding picture disks, 62 lettered hexagons, 60 contained letters and 2 had a picture of whirlwinds on them , they could be used as any letter. A sand timer and instructions are also included.
The letters, words and game cards are made of excellent quality cardboard, with bold letters and fun pictures, great for little hands. They are also fully recyclable.
To play Buzz Words you have four choices, you can match the words to the corresponding picture, you can pick a pair, you can pick a pair to see whom can match the word to the picture the quickest or you can race to spell the word on the picture. All four games are great fun, I love games that teach but are so much fun your children don’t realise they are learning valuable skills. Our favourite game was race to spell, to play you have to pick a picture, place all the letters upside down and race against each other and the timer to spell the word on your picture. There are easier words such as Cat, Dog, Pig. Then they increase to words such as King, Vest up to words such as Queen and Zebra. As the pictures have how to spell the word, nobody had an advantage, which my niece liked she could beat her sisters and cousin by herself. My niece also liked that she could play by herself, matching words to pictures. She liked the colourful pictures and found it easy to sound out any words she did not know, due to the bold lettering and corresponding pictures.
Buzz words has great game play, it’s fun and very inclusive. Even if your children are struggling with their spelling the game is very easy to play and helps children learn though play. You can also use Buzz words to help your child spell their name, learn the alphabet, or you can draw new pictures and use the letters to help your child spell new words. Once your children have got the idea of the game you can add points values to the letters, like in Scrabble and create a whole new dimension to the game. The points values are on the instruction leaflet.
I really like this game, it’s simple, easy for young children to understand. It’s great fun for family play as well as long play, it creates learning through fun. I like the idea of adding points values to the letters it creates more depth to the game, so the game can grow with your child’s understanding of words and spelling. I also like the idea of using the alphabet tiles to learn how to spell other words such as their name. Buzz Words is not expensive, it would make a great Easter present, birthday present for friends or just because it will help your child learn to spell.
My niece really enjoyed playing Buzz Words, she liked the colourful pictures, the easy to read words and the different games she could play. Buzz words is well made, easy to follow, fun and adaptable, and fully recyclable. For these reasons I will be giving Buzz Words..
