The Zapf Creations advent calendar is the perfect treat for little ones who love to take care of baby dolls.
This is an excitingly large double sided advent calendar with 24 doors of varying sizes. It arrives in a cardboard sleeve, which you remove before giving it to the child. There is no plastic wrap, in fact the whole package is single use plastic free which is great. The calendar is suitable for children from 3 years due to the presence of small presents which could be swallowed by a very young child. One side of the calendar is illustrated with a Christmassy scene of a Babyborn doll sitting on a wooden sleigh. The other side of the calendar shows a somewhat retro 80’s looking picture of two dolls, the Babyborn sister and Babyborn brother dolls, (dolls not included) around the Christmas tree. The dolls in the picture are actually wearing many of the accessories included in the calendar, a point which my children noticed after a couple of days and then studied the box to find out what might be found in future windows. Much time was spent guessing what could be where.

The outfits and accessories fit a 43cm doll perfectly, the size range is 39-46cm which covers most similar dolls you might already have. The calendar contains (spoiler alert!) Christmas themed outfits, scarves, boots, headbands and hats, accessories. Once the window is opened much of what’s inside is wrapped in paper which adds an extra layer of excitement to proceedings. The clothes are mix and match so there are a lot of possible final outfits that you can make once everything is unpacked. My personal favourite is the tiny boots though.

Having an autumn birthday, my smallest daughter recently received a Zapf creations doll as a gift and has barely been parted from her baby since. The doll only had one outfit which wasn’t a problem at all but now my daughter has options it’s as though a whole new world has opened up before her.

My children were astonished each time they opened a door and found a new piece of clothing behind it. I honestly thought the novelty and surprise would wear off, especially considering the pictures on the outside of the calendar but for some reason it didn’t.

This is a lot more expensive than a normal advent calendar, but it has at least removed the argument of whether or not they can eat chocolate for breakfast every morning in December. Also, I have seen this toy as being part of the Christmas gift, instead of something else under the tree. For little ones Christmas Day can be overwhelming and by spreading the gift throughout the whole month of December I think it’s been played with so much more than a complete set presented in one go would have been. In future years I will definitely be looking out for this type of calendar which contains real toys rather than disposable items but I’m not sure I’d spend so much each time.
