Did I want a spa day? I pondered that for a while; a day of relaxation, away from the stresses and strains of life, transported to tranquillity? I was sure that I did. What’s more, I not only wanted a spa day, I needed a spa day, because quite frankly, life is hard!
My voucher arrived, beautifully presented, informing me that I had been gifted a spa day for two, including a 25 minute treatment each and explaining how to claim my voucher. I went online to register my voucher and find where my nearest spa was. I discovered that Alveston Manor was my nearest spa and the telephone number to book was provided. The telephone number on the site, however, was a central number and not a direct number for the spa that I wanted. When I rang I was transferred to the Alveston Manor hotel, but then I was transferred back to central reservations where I did manage to get a direct number for Alveston Manor. Unfortunately, however, the spa had a problem with their booking system so were unable to take any bookings for several days. I found it odd that there was no other system in place for taking bookings and started to look at the other spas but felt that they were a little too far away, luckily, I then managed to book in at Alveston Manor.
My friend and I arrived at Alveston Manor just after 10am. We were immediately impressed by the beauty of the hotel and grounds. The manicured lawns and hotel’s 16th century features promised to be the perfect setting for a day of peace and relaxation. We were welcomed and greeted by everybody we encountered. It really stood out that the employees are extraordinarily friendly and cannot do enough to help. After confirming lunch choices and treatment and lunch timings, we were briefly shown around and got on with our day.
We started with an hour in the gym, which was small but adequate as it was not busy. There was an impressive range of equipment which were technologically advanced and rather irritatingly, kept informing me that my range and motion were incorrect on my reps – very fancy! After the gym, we had a lovely swim/stand and chat at each end as ladies do and then showered before lunch. Our lunch was beautifully presented in a box and was absolutely delicious. We ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc to go with our lunch and spent a good couple of hours enjoying our feast and putting the world to rights.
At about 3.30pm (an hour before treatments) we headed to the relaxation room, for a much-needed cup of tea and sit down with our feet up and a read of a magazine. There was only one therapist providing treatments so my friend was called for her back massage first and then I was called after. It would have been ideal if we could have had treatments at the same time but we both rested in the relaxation room whilst the other was having their treatment.
We had a lovely day at Alveston Manor spa, I was slightly disappointed with the spa’s range of facilities, as I was expecting there to be a variety of pools and rooms. Had we not have had such a lengthy lunch I think we would have struggled to find things to do, to fill a day from 10am to 6pm. It was not possible to book any additional treatments and other than the pool, gym and relaxation room there was only a sauna and steam room.
