What better day to test out the Smoker & Grill Barbecue than a sunny Sunday, when you can enjoy some food cooked by him indoors, because what bloke doesn’t take charge of the barbecue! My other half takes the barbecuing very seriously, so purchased some utensils to assist him in his gourmet cooking, tongs which are extra long help from getting too close to the heat of the grill, along with a burger flipper (technical term I’m told!) for prising his offerings off the grill. Gloves are also a must for all in charge of the cooking! A brush is also useful for keeping the grill clean.

The original Bar-Be-Quick Smoker Grill and Barbecue made by Rectella Limited comes very well packaged, which does a great job of protecting the product. You need a screwdriver and a spanner to help with putting the unit together, all the nuts, bolts and screws were together in a bag. The instructions on assembly along with diagrams helped the assembling process which took around an hour to complete. Once together it’s very robust and stands around a metre high. The unit can be used in the normal way a barbecue is, or as a steamer, smoker, or a steamer smoker grill. It’s very versatile, it comes with two layers, so if you are catering for only a few people you might want to remove the upper tier, but for larger groups use the whole system.

You could also purchase for the smoker some hickory wood chips, these need some preparation, you should soak them in water for 30 minutes prior to use, to add a Smokey flavour to your barbecue food. We did purchase a smoker box for these to go in on the barbecue but you can just sprinkle these over the coals. When using the steamer you fill the pan with water. Like most barbecue systems, we lit the fuel around an hour prior to wanting to start cooking. We especially like the design of this particular barbecue as we have young grandchildren, our garden is full of all sorts of play toys, this doesn’t take up lots of room without compromising how much food can be cooked on it.

The steamer process seems well suited to cooking a larger piece of meat, for example a whole chicken, over a period of time. They recommend an hour for each half kilogram of meat. Unlike a traditional barbecue this process takes longer but the results were fantastic, we enjoyed the chicken, we roasted slowly and it was extremely tasty. Definitely something we would do again.

We tried also seasoned chops along with burgers and sausages. All the meat was tasty and succulent. Nothing was burned which was a real game changer in our household, not the usual burnt offerings we have come to be used to. This is a great piece of kit and brings a whole new dimension to outdoor cooking. We will most certainly enjoy using across the week, whether for just us two or larger family gatherings, it’s a grand addition to our garden this summer.
