Apey 1st Birthday Kuanza

APE-Y 1ST BIRTHDAY KUANZA!

GOING APE IN THE SUN TO CELEBRATE CHESSINGTON’S YOUNGEST GORILLA’S

1ST BIRTHDAY WITH A SPECIAL BIRTHDAY TREAT!

Kuanza is the youngest Western Lowland Gorilla at Chessington World of Adventures Resort so the Zoo team decided to do something special to celebrate her very first birthday! They created ‘1’ shapes out of Kuanza’s favourite snack and gave them to her as a special birthday surprise. Once the treats were in place, keepers unveiled the surprises hidden around the enclosure and it wasn’t long before Kuanza ventured out with her mother Shanga to see her surprise treats and tucked straight in!

Kuanza is the first child of Shanga and silverback male of the group Damisi and celebrated her first birthday with her whole family including her Grandma, her cheeky older half brothers Mbula, aged four, and Mwana – who also turned one earlier this year. The mischievous trio love to play together and are enjoying having fun in the sun!

Kuanza was the third baby Western Lowland Gorilla born at Chessington in the past four years, thanks to the Zoo’s successful breeding programme; the most successful programme in Europe! The Western Lowland Gorilla is a vulnerable species which reproduces slowly; with females producing only one baby every five years on average so the three playful young gorillas are a testament to the team at Chessington World of Adventures Resort.

You can visit Kuanza and her family at Chessington World of Adventures Resort in the Trail of the Kings and, with daily scatter feeds, you could see the whole family, including little Kuanza, tucking into some tasty treats on your next visit!
