Wild Adventures by Brita Granstrom and Mick Manning Review

Reviewed by Claire Woodroffe

This is a book for the entire family, it’s packed with a whole host of outdoor activities, the aim is to encourage awareness and exploration of our natural world.

The front cover is very attractive, I showed my 8 and 5 year old boys and they both grabbed it out of my hands! They were enticed by the thought of a wild adventure! The illustrations are very child friendly, with each page we chatted about the pictures, what we thought the children were doing, then went on to read the text. About 2 thirds of each page is illustrations with short notes of text between, in my opinion the amount of text is about right, as the illustrations are what attracted the children and are fairly self explanatory, the text then reinforced the illustrations and gave hints and tips. The wording is also very child friendly, my eldest read the majority of the book to his little brother (and listening to them planning their own adventure whilst they did so was lovely!). On the whole the book is fun and educational with many simple ideas to make the outdoors fun, there are even ideas for rainy days.

The author, Brita Granstrom and husband Mick Manning who share the illustration between them and mixing words and pictures in inventive ways, they have won many awards, including the Smarties Silver Award, and are three-times winners of the English Association Award. This book really highlights their obvious love of Wild Adventures and their enthusiasm is infectious.

This book retails at £12.99 which I think is a fair price, I certainly think it’s a book we’ll refer back to many times in the future. This book will certainly accompany us on walks, trips the park and holidays! In fact we are off out this afternoon to go and ‘meet a tree’!
