Whaley’s Big Adventure Review

Reviewed by Katy Nettleton

Synopsis:
Join Whaley on his big adventure in the ocean as he meets Whales of all different sizes. Written by 5 year old Alexander Luke and presented by his grandmother, award-winning children’s author Carole P. Roman, this oceanic adventure of whale sized proportions will teach youngsters about the different Whales that live in the oceans.

I read this book with my 4 year old twins at bedtime, and they loved it! My initial impressions were that the pictures could have been brighter; however this did not seem to faze them! The story was about Whaley who went on an adventure to meet other whale species from around the world and identified the differences between whale species, but also the key differences. As the book is written for a US audience the language and measurements used was slightly different to the usual bedtime stories we read: but this was an opportunity to broaden our girls’ vocabulary and wider learning. The girls enjoyed the story and asked questions about mammals – so very positive to aid their schooling. Our girls tried to read the book a day later (they have just started school and are learning to read) but due to the text style they were unable to recognise some of the letters to build up the words and with the pictures being illustrated by Alexander they weren’t able to “read along” as confidently as they do with other books.

On the whole, I enjoyed reading the story and I learnt a lot about whales that I wasn’t aware of before as did my girls and they asked to read the book again tonight – so must be a hit!
