Thriller Live at the Festival Theatre Edinburgh Review

14-19 May 2018

Reviewed by Dee Ryz

“Thriller Live” is a fun, vibrant homage to the late Michael Jackson. The show starts at the outset of Michael Jackson’s career and takes the audience back to his early songs right through to his untimely death in 2009.

Covering all the hits from his decades as a star – from the Jackson Five days “I want you back” to the more modern “Smooth Criminal”, “Earth Song”, and of course, the shows namesake “Thriller” – this musical hits all the right notes. I wouldn’t call myself a massive Michael Jackson fan, but I was impressed that I knew most of the songs – he wasn’t known as the King of a Pop for nothing!

The singing from the 4 main performers was spot on; they easily transitioned from one song to another seamlessly. The performers were fantastic – special mention to Britt Quentin and Adriana Louise who were brilliant (and I want to know where she got the sparkly boots for ‘Can You Feel It’!). The acts were so engaging, they even had the entire auditorium on their feet during the first half. The live band hidden in the back of the stage were also very impressive, with the odd guitarist appearing on stage to dazzle the audience with their solos.

The choreography was spot on too and very Michael Jackson-esque, although my only ‘critique’ would be that at times I didn’t know where to look as there was so much going on!

Located in Edinburgh city centre, close to transport links (Waverly Station being a 5-10 min walk and buses stopping outside the door on a regular basis) and on street parking available for free after 6.30pm, the Festival Theatre is ideally located, with a modern, glass frontage disguising a traditional theatre inside.

Running until the 19th May, I’d definitely recommend coming along for the “thrill” of it!
