Thoroughly Modern Millie is an energetic show full of everything you need for the perfect evening, song and dance with plenty of humour added in for good measure! It really is one of the very best shows I have seen. It opened last night (Monday 6 February 2017) in the King’s Theatre in Glasgow to a full house.

Based on the 1960’s film by Richard Morris, starring Julie Andrews, Thoroughly Modern Millie opened in Broadway in 2002 and went on to win six of the eleven categories it was nominated for at the Tony Awards that year.

Thoroughly Modern Millie is the story of Kansas Girl, Millie Dillmount, who moves New York City to marry well. It follows her trials and tribulations to find somewhere to live and a job. It is set in the 1920s in the time of prohibition. She manages to secure a room in Hotel Priscilla run by the questionable Mrs Meers who has an eye for girls who are ‘all alone in the world’ and kidnaps them for white slavery. Millie has a grand plan to marry her boss Mr Graydon but Jimmy Smith, played by Sam Barrett, puts a spanner in the works and with Muzzy’s (Jenny Fitzpatrick) guidance she realises love conquers all and ultimately marry her true love after of course foiling Mrs Meers kidnap plan!

Michelle Collins plays the hilarious Mrs Meers and she very much entered into the spirit of the character!

The lead role of Millie was very ably played by Joanne Clifton of Strictly Come Dancing fame. She was amazing- what a fabulous singer and dancer. Mr Trevor Graydon, Graham MacDuff was terrific, his comic timing was spot on but the cast of 17 were all outstanding.

The show is beautifully staged with great creative effects. I loved the tap dancing desks. The use of the overhead screen to translate the Chinese of Ching Ho (Damian Buhagiar) and Bun Foo (Andy Yau) was effective and they were very, very funny!

The King’s Theatre is situated in Bath Street in Glasgow’s city centre. We sat in the Grand Circle where the visibility was excellent, the seating was comfortable and the staff efficient and helpful.

I would highly recommend purchasing tickets for Thoroughly Modern Millie while it runs in Glasgow until 11th February.
