Being a huge fan of The Sound of Music and a bit of a fanatic of the film, I was a little worried I’d be too sceptical of how well the production compared, especially as I’d seen a Sound of Music production before, however I do not remember being as impressed previously with either the cast or stage as I was tonight.

For those of you who don’t already know it, the musical is based on a naval Captain living in Austria in the 1930’s who hires a Governess for his seven children. The story follows Maria’s journey from leaving the abbey to becoming the governess in the extremely strictly run house to eventually marrying the captain and becoming mother to the children then finally having to flee Austria. And how throughout it all she brought fun to the house and filled it with music.

The cast were fantastic in portraying the von Trapp family. From the opening line to the curtain call the theatre came alive with music. The voices of the cast were incredible, particularly Daniella Hope who played Maria so wonderfully. Grace Chapman and Jan Hartley (Liesl and Mother Abbess) also had such strong beautiful voices. All the characters were excellent in their roles and the children’s singing and acting was fabulous throughout the evening.

The stage was spectacular and very grand. Probably the best stage design I think I have seen! They were well thought out with incredible backdrops. You almost felt like you were sitting in church in some scenes!

The King’s Theatre is a traditional small theatre. The atmosphere and ambiance was warm the theatre itself clean and fresh and the staff very helpful, friendly and polite. There is a great modern bar which I suspect has been renovated recently. The theatre is in the heart of Glasgow City Centre, which could potentially be difficult for parking at peak times but easily accessible by public transport.

Any scepticism I had of how well the play would stand up to the film was absolutely squashed. At times I felt I could actually be watching the film as opposed to watching a typical theatre production. I really enjoy the production and evening and would certainly recommend to family and friends.
