I set off with my mum to watch That’ll Be The Day at the Tunbridge Wells Assembly Hall and you could tell as soon as we got to the car park that it was going to be a packed house. The audience was mainly an older clientele but also included a selection of hen nights and birthday groups out for a good time.

The show was billed as a musical so we were surprised when the curtains went up just to see a standard band set up of drum kit, guitars and keyboards. We were both expecting a stage full of scenery. In fact it’s a mixture of music and comedy sketches and not really a musical, however you certainly get your money’s worth with the show.

It’s packed full of music with a great band playing everything from The Beatles to Billy Joel. There was two fantastic acoustic sets, guitar playing from the Shadows, before Cliff joined in of course and an amazing battle of the drummers to the Wipe Out tune which practically got a standing ovation. The band is really versatile and within the group of 11 members, most could play at least two instruments and the majority could sing lead vocals.

We found the first half a little disjointed as although the comedy sketches were hilariously funny they didn’t always tie in with the music. In the second half though the jokes tied in well including very funny sets from Chas & Dave and Julio Iglesias which had the audience in stitches. Pretty much the whole theatre was up dancing in the second half which included Bonnie Tyler and Status Quo tracks, and almost, but not quite, finished with That’ll Be The Day. When they played Glad All Over at the finale the stamping was so loud I thought the seat stands were going to collapse.

The show really has something for everyone young or old with great music and humour, in fact we found out one of the groups in the audience had attended 14 times! It comes out twice a year with a different Christmas show running in December, which would be a great start to a Christmas Party.

Great entertainment and a fun night out.
