Ravensburger Big Ben 3D Puzzle Review

Reviewed by David Savage

I recently received this 3D jigsaw puzzle of one of London’s most recognised buildings and landmarks, Big Ben, the clock tower at the Palace of Westminster.

On opening the box I found an instruction sheet showing how the pieces click together and the 3 individual sections that need to be completed and then joined together with some information about Big Ben itself, a strong cardboard building base with an aerial picture of the grounds around Big Ben, 3 plastic accessory pieces required to complete the look and of course 216 sturdy plastic jigsaw pieces. Now I was ready to start building.

There are 2 methods that you can use to assemble this puzzle, by eye (if you want a challenge) or by using the numbers of each individual piece. I chose to start using following the numbered system.

To start there are 8 pieces that press into the cardboard base. You then add 4 hinged corner pieces to give you a solid base to work from. The Big Ben Tower is assembled in 3 pieces so I separated the pieces into 3 piles for each section. One this one was done I started to build the tower.

By using the number system the puzzle is quite easy to assemble. I put together the first section (no’s 1-132) and then placed one of the plastic inserts on top. The clock face was assembled next (no’s 133-168) and another plastic insert placed on top on this and then the last part added to the top of this (no’s 169-216) and the last plastic piece, the point, added to the top.

I now had a completed 3D model of Big Ben that measures 41cm high that had taken me maybe an hour to complete and it looks great.

Overall, this is an excellent model of Big Ben and a great puzzle. It was easy to assemble using the numbering system and was easy to take apart again. I aim to try and build it again without the aid of the numbers!

The quality of the pieces is of a high standard and click together very easily. The completed puzzle is very sturdy so you can leave it complete and have it displayed on a shelf should you wish to do so.

With an RRP of £19.99 I think it is good value for money and would make an excellent gift for jigsaw lovers and model builders. You can even get Tower Bridge to compliment it.
