Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella at Milton Keynes Theatre Review
Reviewed by Amanda Browne
We went to opening night of Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella at Milton Keynes Theatre on Tuesday 13th February 2018. I had seen a Matthew Bourne production before and hadn’t been sold on it, but the press and anyone I spoke to told me this show would be amazing. It’s Cinderella, what’s not to love, I thought.
Cinderella is a timeless tale of love… the Prince… the girl… the shoe.
This was a very modern twist that had no relation to the Cinderella we know and love.
Set in circa 1940 this Cinderella tale led you on a journey that bore no relation to the original tale.
That’s ok, I can do different I told myself. In parts this is a very adult show, so you need to know that it’s not very suitable for children. This Cinderella has a very adult theme altogether. I would have preferred more Cinderella in her ballgown than her underwear. No Fairy Godmother… it’s a Fairy Angel.
The scenery was lovely, the costumes authentic. The dancing fairly captivating. I have to say when I go for a night at the theatre I’m looking for escapism. A journey of emotions that take me away from my day to day life. In short, this show did not do that for me.
I tried, I truly did. I can do alternative and get the twist… lots of stepbrothers in a male orientated show. My friend told me to appreciate the pressed knees and toes. I tried.
Maybe to truly appreciate Matthew Bourne you need a dance background as that’s two of his shows now and I am none the wiser, nor impressed. As to ballet, it’s well and truly off my bucket list, I really thought I would be more enthralled, but I just didn’t get it. I’ve decided I’m just not educated enough, don’t let me put you off though, it’s a great production and if alternative is your thing you most surely should go see it.
