Light and Shadow

Loop Dance Company and Play on Words present:
Light and Shadow
The sixth and final site-specific installation of the Encounter programme
Temple Manor, Sat 22nd – Sun 30th October 2011, 7.30pm

In Strood’s 13th century manor, two Kent based companies are creating a large scale, site specific performance that clings to the walls, hangs from the ceilings and stretches across the floors. The promenade performance invites the audience to explore with all their senses by playing with light and darkness, using projections, sound installations and live dancers who dart in and out of the shadows. Visitors will be led round the building in small groups, as well as left to soak up the atmosphere in the undercroft.

Light and Shadow is the sixth and last commission of the Encounter programme, which began in July. Encounter has seen temporary, site-specific installations appearing in hidden and underused spaces across North Kent. Temple Manor, part of English Heritage, now stands on an industrial estate in Strood.

Play on Words Theatre was formed in 1990 and is based at The Brook Theatre, Chatham, Kent UK with support from Medway Council. The company has produced many touring productions, including Prostitutes Only Marry in May (N. Ireland and Scotland), Fringe First Award winning Tom Crean – Antarctic Explorer (Ireland, UK, Australia, USA) and Melody for Medway Fuse Festival 2009. Their work in theatre-in-education has included touring Shakespeare and various history shows from the Tudors to World War II, and they also run drama/dance summer schools both in England and the Channel Islands. After Light and Shadow, they are collaborating with the Brook Creative Companies for The Christmas Adventures of Snowy the Fox.

Loop Dance Company is Kent based and was founded in 1993 by Artistic Director Nina Atkinson, who continues to steer its creative focus by collaborating with many different artists and exploring different mediums including site specific, site sensitive, installation and film based work with both professional and community performers. Loop is a registered charity and their mission is to make touring contemporary dance works to the highest professional standards, adding value through inclusive and accessible opportunities for participation, learning, and enjoyment of dance and the arts. Loop’s education department, LoopEd, provides opportunities to take part in contemporary dance for people of all ages and backgrounds.
