Lakeland Frosting Review

Reviewed by Louise Styles

I am a firm believer that most celebrations should be marked with cake! Both my sister and best friend have had babies in the last two weeks and another friend started a new job so I decided the best gift for all three would be a tray of cupcakes. I’ve been intending to try Lakelands range of flavoured frosting for a while and this seemed to be the perfect opportunity. They currently offer three packs of icing which include two 200g tubs in Bubblegum & Candy Floss, Cherry & Cola and Pina Colada & Mojito. In addition, they also do a 350g tub of Gin & Tonic and Prosecco.

For all the bases, I used a plain and simple vanilla cupcake because I was expecting the frosting to be packed with flavour, I wasn’t wrong! The bubblegum frosting had the most amazing pink colour and smelt and tasted exactly like bubblegum of our youth. The candyfloss flavour for me didn’t match my expectation of it, it was a gentler flavour than the bubblegum and not unpleasant, but wasn’t a taste I would associate with candyfloss. With both of these I topped them with some pink edible glitter for added sparkle.

The Cherry frosting was a deep red/pink colour, really vibrant and had a really ‘sweet’ cherry flavour. The cola was a brown shade, as you would imagine for anything cola flavoured and it actually had a fizz to the taste. These two were my favourite of the double packs – I mixed them in the piping bag so that we had lots of Cherry Cola cupcakes topped with half a glacier cherry and they were a real hit.

Of all the frostings, I was most excited to try the Pina Colada, sadly it wasn’t for me. The smell was amazing, tropical and coconutty but the taste didn’t quite work. What I found funny was that of this pack if I was ordering cocktails I would always pick a pina colada and never ever a mojito however in icing form I loved the mojito. It has a mint green colour and I served with some grated lime on top – the taste worked really well on the cupcakes and I will most definitely be buying this one again.

The prosecco ones were eagerly anticipated by everyone and they were tasty however they weren’t quite as sweet as the other flavours and didn’t quite get the taste right. I added half a fresh strawberry on these and they looked great!

The biggest surprise of the bunch for me was the gin and tonic flavour, I don’t like gin but I LOVE this frosting… so much so that I might have had a few digestives smothered in frosting while I was decorating!  I topped each of these with some fresh lemon and they were a real treat.

All of the frostings piped really well from a bag (the gin and tonic spread very easily on biscuits with a knife!) and because of their colour looked really great. The really sweet ones, for me, were too sweet; Bubblegum, Candy floss and Pina colada. But the taste and flavour of the Cherry, Cola, Mojito and Gin and tonic were spot on!! All the frostings are alcohol free so great for all ages and they are suitable for vegetarians too. They really did go a long way too – the packaging says will cover a dozen cupcakes or a 25cm diameter cake however I managed to get more out of mine as you really don’t need a lot of frosting on each cake. A great novelty item some of which I would definitely use again.
