If You Were Me and Lived in… India by Carole P. Roman Review

Reviewed by Emma Johnston

This is the 4th book in a large series of “If You Were Me and Lived in…” books by Carole P. Roman. The series is designed as an introduction to culture around the world for children up to the age of 8.

The books take children on a fun and exciting journey with the aim to show young readers the diverse world around us and the value of all these different cultures. This is the 1st book in this series that my daughter and I have read and we both enjoyed it.

At school my daughter has learned the basics about Divali, Sita and Rama, but this book gave her much more information about India and its culture. The book starts with a map of the world to locate India, followed by a larger map of the country so we could locate the capital, New Delhi.  We learned lots of interesting facts for example that there are over 100 different languages spoken, common names for boys and girls, a little bit about the Taj Mahal, favourite foods enjoyed, and about the festival of Holi.

The book is bright and colourful with lovely illustrations and clear print, making it interesting to read. At the back of the book there is a pronunciation guide which we found very useful and had great fun learning how to say all these new words!

I’m all for books that teach tolerance of other cultures through education, teaching young readers everywhere that even though the world is large, children all over are essentially the same!

A great book.
