I love crafting with my grandchildren so I was delighted to receive the Hobbycraft Make Your Own Bow Bird Pencil Case Kit and Make Your Own Bird Shopping Bag Kit to review. These kits are both aimed at 8 years plus, but with a bit of assistance my 5 year old granddaughter, Heidi, was able to make a lovely pencil case and bag.
As I have previously taught young children to sew, it was probably easier for us to make the items than it would be for a novice. We first made the pencil case which comes with easy to follow instructions. The felt pieces have ready punched holes and are all individually lettered so it is easy for little fingers to sew the shapes together with a safe plastic needle and thread. The only really fiddly part was when we had to sew the beads onto the bird shape to create the eyes, but with a little bit of patience we managed to get it right. Heidi soon got the hang of sewing the shapes together to make a lovely bird sitting on a branch which she then sewed onto the pencil case. She then stitched the edges of the case together. I particularly liked the way that the case comes with a zip already attached, as this would have been just too difficult for a child to add on. The end result is an attractive felt pencil case which any child would be proud to create.
We then decided to make the felt bag. This is another lovely sewing activity and comes complete with easy to follow instructions, felt shapes, buttons, a plastic needle and thread, in fact everything needed to create this beautiful bag. As Heidi had already completed one activity, she found it quite easy to do this one. The finished result was a colourful handbag with a bird shape sewn onto the front.
These kits would make an ideal Christmas gift for a child who enjoys crafting. We spent a few enjoyable hours busily sewing and ended up with something to be really proud of. I will certainly buy more of these kits, as my granddaughter was kept entertained for hours.
