Gilbert & Sullivan’s Ruddygore at the King’s Theatre Edinburgh Review

Reviewed by Lynsey Roberts

The Edinburgh Gilbert & Sullivan Society (EDGAS) production of Ruddygore, set in a small village in the 19th century is about the shy and timid Robin Oakapple who is madly in love with the village’s prettiest maid – Rose Maybud. However, Robin has the terrible secret that he is Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd, the bad Baronet of Ruddygore with a curse to commit a crime a day or die. When Sir Ruthven’s foster brother Richard Dauntless returns from sea and tries to steal Rose, Robin’s secret is exposed on the day of his and Rose’s wedding. The legend is shared that Rose’s aunt was to marry Robin’s uncle years earlier until she found out that he was the bad Baron of Ruddygore and so it looks like the two’s fate will follow that of their ancestors.

The first act is light and at points comic with the village’s bridesmaids desperately wanting a village wedding, fun loving Richard returning from sea and Rose falling in love with both brothers. Gillian Robertson who plays Rose has a beautiful voice and Chris Cotter portrays the light-hearted sailor brilliantly.

The second act is much darker as Sir Ruthven takes his place as the bad Baronet of Ruddygore after Rose runs out on him. With character’s like mad Margaret and Sir Roderic this production has everything from light hearted fun, to slightly crazy to dark and sinister.

The King’s is a traditional small theatre with a welcoming warm atmosphere and ambiance. It is very comfortable and clean with extremely helpful, friendly staff. Our seats in the stalls provided an excellent view of the stage. The theatre is located in the heart of Edinburgh City Centre, so easily accessible by public transport with parking available around the theatre. There is also plenty of option for pre/post theatre drinks and food with the variety of restaurants and bars nearby.

I had a good evening at the King’s Theatre and would recommend the production to friends and family.
