My little boy aged 7 is an massive fan of Catchphrase on television and even has the game on our I-pad, so I was really excited when I was given the opportunity to review the all new Catch Phrase board game from Drumond Park and so was he.
The game came cellophane wrapped in a good quality sturdy box. It is for 2-4 players however myself and my son played it together.
The instructions are clear and the game is really easy to set up and you soon get the idea of the aim of the game. There are 3 rounds which can be played and they are based on the TV game show.
Round 1 – Individual Round
One player is the host and puts a catch phrase card into the ‘Mr Chips’ cardholder (my son loved him). There is an egg timer which is turned over and the player tries to guess the answer. Each correct guess is rewarded with £100 and being able to pick 1 square off the large ‘Bonus’ catchphrase. This continues until the bonus catchphrase can be guessed.
Round 2 – Rapid Fire Round
The same player is the host who turns over a catchphrase card and the egg-timer. The other players then shout out answers until someone guesses correctly and wins £200. 5 cards are played in this round.
Round 3 – Super Catch Phrase Round
The host puts 6 cards picture down on the Super Catch Phrase board. The host starts with the bottom line and turns the cards over, until 1 phrase is guessed correctly then moves up a row. Bottom line pays £300, Middle Line £400 and Top Line £500.
You then swap hosts and repeat the above. The winner of the game is the player with the most money.
I am not a great lover of board games as I normally find them hard to set up and the instructions are usually very unclear. Drumond Park’s Catch Phrase however is a brilliant game and we spent over an hour playing it and loved every minute.
The only criticism I have is that there are a limited amount of ‘Bonus’ catchphrase cards. This could mean that if you play the game a lot you could get used to seeing them and that would make guessing much easier.
Overall a fantastic game which is good quality and loads of fun.
Suitable for 2 to 4 players aged 8+.
