Dog Loves Fairy Tales by Louise Yates Review

Reviewed by Gemma Ingham

Dog Loves Fairy Tales is a book by Louise Yates and winner of the Roald Dahl Funny Prize.

It is a tale about a dog who loves stories and comes across a book of Fairy Tales. Upon opening the book he encounters an unfortunate imp who has been stuck in a jar due to a ‘bad luck’ curse. Dog helps the imp out of the jar and takes him on an adventure to try to find the witch that can take the curse from him.

They enter an enchanted forest and along the way they encounter numerous fairy tale characters and the story is accompanied with charming illustrations of those characters (and more). My daughter loved pointing at the characters, telling me who was who, and making up little stories about what those characters were doing.

I love that the book starts with teaching that it is good to help others and throughout the story Dog encourages the imp to keep trying when he faces obstacles. The end of the story reveals that the imp was lucky to have such a good friend in the Dog, so actually didn’t have a bad luck curse after all. It helps get the message across that friendship is a thing to be treasured, and if you have a good friend you are very lucky indeed.

The book itself is a large hardback with quality thick paper pages. The text is set out in manageable paragraphs in a large print so is manageable for children who are trying to be a bit more independent and read it by themselves.

We really enjoyed the book, it kept my little one engaged throughout and as a parent I approve of the morals the story is teaching.
