I was very excited to be visiting this year’s panto at Wolverhampton’s Grand Theatre although my son not so much. We go every year but had actually decided not to go this year due to it being Cinderella and my son saying that’s he was too grown up for Princess stuff!

However, he grudgingly came along to review it with me… and he was so glad he did! This year’s panto stars Julian Clary as Dandini, Joe Tracini (from Holyoaks) as Buttons, Alice Baker as Cinderella and Niki Evans as the Fairy Godmother. However, William and I both agreed that Clary and Tracini completely stole the show. I thoroughly enjoyed all Clary’s double entendres and doubly so when William kept asking why I was laughing! William loved Tracini, his magic tricks, jokes and songs all fitted him perfectly and he suited the role of Buttons brilliantly.

This pantomime had everything you’d expect: cheesy jokes, references to the local area, slapstick and glitzy costumes. But it also has so much more… a flying robotic horse for starters – it was a fantastic end to the first half and left William open mouthed! The lighting effects were spectacular too and hugely enhanced the whole show. Niki Evans made a fabulous Fairy Godmother, despite or maybe because of her slightly dodgy efforts at a Black Country accent! The props and back drops were all artistically brilliant and William’s favourite parts were when Evans entered the stage on a descending moon and the accompanying firework effects.

If you’ve never visited the Grand before, then this is certainly a great reason to do so. It’s a beautiful Victorian theatre in the centre of Wolverhampton, with several carparks in very close proximity. Pre-show meal specials are available at the pubs and restaurants nearby.

This show is worth every penny of the ticket price, it’s fun for girls and boys from 3 to 103!

William and I heartily give Cinderella a 5 out of 5.
